motorhome in winter

As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, it’s time to start thinking about getting your motorhome ready for winter. Proper winterisation ensures your vehicle stays in good condition through the cold months and is ready for use when the warmer weather returns. Here are the essential steps you should take to prepare your motorhome for winter storage.

Drain and Winterise Your Plumbing System

Freezing temperatures can cause your water pipes to burst, leading to costly repairs. To avoid this, drain your water system thoroughly. Open all faucets, including the shower and outdoor shower, and ensure all water is flushed out. Once drained, add RV-specific antifreeze to the system to protect the pipes from freezing.

Protect the Exterior

Give your motorhome a thorough wash and wax to protect the paintwork from harsh winter elements. Clean the roof and undercarriage as well, removing any debris that could cause damage over time. Consider investing in a high-quality cover to shield your vehicle from snow, ice, and dirt, reducing the wear and tear on the body.

Check and Seal Windows and Doors

Inspect all seals around your windows and doors to ensure they are intact. Winter winds can be brutal, and any gaps can lead to drafts or moisture buildup inside your motorhome. If you notice any cracks or damage to seals, replace or repair them before storing your motorhome.

Store Your Batteries Properly

Cold temperatures can significantly affect your motorhome’s batteries. If you plan to store your motorhome for an extended period, it’s a good idea to remove the batteries and store them in a warmer, dry place. This will help maintain their charge and extend their lifespan.

Protect the Tires

Cold weather can cause tires to lose pressure. Before storing your motorhome, check the tire pressure and inflate them to the recommended level. If you’re storing it for several months, consider using tire covers to protect them from UV damage and cracking.

Empty the Waste Tanks

Empty your black and grey water tanks before winterising your motorhome. This will prevent any waste from freezing inside the tanks, which could cause cracks and damage. Be sure to clean the tanks thoroughly to avoid unpleasant odours when you start using the motorhome again.

Prepare the Interior

Take the time to clean and remove any food or perishables from inside the motorhome. This will prevent mold and unpleasant smells from developing during the winter. You might also want to place moisture-absorbing products inside to keep the interior dry and free of dampness.

Check the Heating System

If your motorhome is equipped with a heating system, it’s important to ensure its functioning properly before storing it. Check the heater for any malfunctions and make sure it’s clean and ready for use. If your motorhome has an engine-driven heater, consider running it for a short period to make sure it’s working efficiently.

Perform a Thorough Inspection

Finally, take some time to check over the entire motorhome. Look for any signs of damage or wear that could worsen over the winter months. Check the chassis, suspension, and brakes, and make sure the motorhome is completely safe for storage.

Taking the time to properly winterise your motorhome will ensure that it’s protected against the elements and ready to hit the road when spring arrives. If you’re unsure of any step or need help, Maple Leisure is here to assist you with all your motorhome maintenance and storage needs.
