As the festive season approaches, many motorhome owners tuck their vehicles away until spring. But while you’re busy wrapping presents and watching Christmas films, thieves and harsh winter conditions can put your pride and joy at risk.
Here’s how to store your motorhome safely this Christmas – with smart security, careful planning, and a little seasonal sense.
Choose a Secure Storage Spot
If your motorhome is being stored at home, try to position it out of direct street view. A driveway behind locked gates, or a secure garage, is ideal. If you’re using a storage facility, make sure it’s one that offers 24/7 CCTV coverage, controlled access such as key fobs or pin entry and perimeter fencing and lighting.
Professional storage sites often have designated bays with monitored entry, which can give extra peace of mind during the Christmas period when thefts tend to rise.
Install Security Cameras and Deterrents
Motorhome thefts are unfortunately common in the run-up to Christmas, as criminals know owners are away visiting family. Visible deterrents make all the difference.
- Security cameras.
Fit motion activated cameras or a smart doorbell camera near where your motorhome is parked. Many connect to your phone, so you can check in remotely. - Wheel locks and steering locks.
A visible physical barrier tells thieves it’s not an easy target and will also stop the motorhome from been driving away should they gain access. - Alarm and GPS tracking.
A small investment that could save you thousands if the worst happens.
Reduce Fire Risks
Cold weather and electrical devices don’t always mix well. Before storing your motorhome, do a quick fire-safety check.
- Disconnect the leisure battery if not using a trickle charger.
- Unplug all appliances and switch off the gas supply at the bottle.
- Clean out the oven and hob, removing grease that could become a fire hazard.
- Check smoke alarms and fire extinguishers are in working order.
Avoid storing flammable materials (like fuel cans or cleaning chemicals) nearby especially if your motorhome is parked in a garage.
Make It Less Accessible
Sometimes the simplest barriers are the best deterrents. You can park another vehicle across your motorhome to block easy access or use driveway posts or locking bollards. Keep keys out of sight inside your home ideally in a Faraday pouch to block relay signals if your motorhome uses keyless entry. You can buy these cheaply enough from most automotive stores.
Don’t Forget the Surroundings
If your motorhome is stored on your property, take a look at the landscaping. Overgrown bushes or high hedges can give thieves cover, so keep the area tidy and visible from your house or from the road. Try and avoid fast growing shrubs that could grow quickly on the roof and cause damp.
In contrast, if your vehicle is visible from the street, consider privacy fencing or screens that prevent opportunists from spotting it. Aim for a balance between visibility for security cameras and privacy from prying eyes.
Winter-Proof It Before Storage
Before locking up your motorhome for the Christmas holidays and make sure it’s properly prepared for the cold. Frozen pipes and damp interiors can cause major headaches when spring returns.
We’ve covered this in detail in our post How To Prepare Your Motorhome For Winter check it out for essential tips on draining water systems, protecting seals, and keeping interiors fresh.
Christmas should be a time for relaxing, not worrying about your motorhome’s safety. With a few simple steps from adding security cameras to keeping the area clear and well-lit – you can protect your investment and start the new year stress-free.
